Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio is marking its 50th anniversary with the completion of its 1,500th home, a four-bedroom house built in just 50 hours by more than 1,000 volunteers for a single mother and her three children. The very first Habitat home ever built anywhere in the world was built right here in San Antonio, making this city the global birthplace of the affordable homeownership model.

A cooperative crew of volunteers and workers push forward on a community-driven home construction project in San Antonio, Texas.

Some milestones deserve to be announced with fanfare. Some deserve something quieter, something that matches the dignity of the work itself. Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio has reached both kinds of milestone at once, and the combination is remarkable.

This year, the organization celebrates 50 years of affordable homebuilding in San Antonio. It also completed its 1,500th home. And it did so by marshaling more than 1,000 volunteers to build a four-bedroom house in just 50 hours, a home delivered to a single mother and her three children as the living symbol of what half a century of steady, faithful work looks like.

But there is a deeper layer to this story that San Antonio residents deserve to know. The first Habitat for Humanity home ever built anywhere in the world was built right here, in this city. San Antonio is not just a place where Habitat operates. San Antonio is where Habitat began. Every affiliate, every home built in every country around the globe, traces its roots back to a lot in this city, and to the community of people who believed, 50 years ago, that a family deserved a decent place to live.

A Model That Began Here

When you walk past a Habitat home anywhere in the world, or when you see the logo on a volunteer's shirt, the history behind it runs through San Antonio. The affiliate now known as Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio, located at 311 Probandt St, is one of the largest Habitat affiliates in the nation, building 50 to 60 homes annually. It has operated continuously for five decades without losing sight of the founding principle: a hand-up, not a handout. Families partner with Habitat, investing their own labor and time, and earn the right to purchase their homes at affordable terms.

For families in our city, that model means something concrete. It means neighbors who have a stake in their street. It means children growing up with the stability that comes from a permanent home. It means a mother who worked alongside a thousand volunteers over 50 hours because she believed in what that house was going to mean for her family's future.

Methodist Meadows and the Next 50 Homes

The 1,500th home is the first of 35 houses planned for Methodist Meadows, a new Habitat community being developed off Chandler Road. That neighborhood does not exist yet in the way it will in a few years. Right now it is a plan, a set of lots, and a commitment. But if you know how Habitat works, you know that a plan and a commitment is exactly how 1,500 homes began, one at a time, over five decades.

For families interested in the Methodist Meadows community and Habitat's homeownership program, the process starts with an application. Habitat builds with families, not just for them, and the partnership includes sweat equity hours that future homeowners contribute alongside volunteers. It is a model that has proven itself here for 50 years, and it is the model that will shape the next 35 homes in this new community.

What 1,000 Volunteers Chose to Do

The 50-hour build that marked the anniversary was not a symbolic gesture. It was a real house, built to real standards, delivered to a real family. More than 1,000 people chose to give their time, their muscle, and their care to make that happen in 50 hours. In a season when many families are managing summer schedules and back-to-school preparations, that kind of community showing up matters.

Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio operates four Habitat Home Center resale stores in the city, where new and gently used building supplies, furniture, appliances, and home goods are sold to support the mission. Shopping at a Home Center, or donating materials to one, is a practical way any resident can be part of this work without picking up a hammer. Hours run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the 311 Probandt St location.

Fifty years. Fifteen hundred homes. One city that started it all. As Methodist Meadows begins to take shape and 35 more families prepare to walk through doors of their own, San Antonio is once again living up to its reputation as a city with genuine heart and a deep belief in its neighbors. That is the kind of community legacy worth knowing, and worth supporting.
